It’s March Madness in Gymnastics!
Friday March 21, 2008
Ok, so maybe it's not the NCAA tournament, but the month of March is also a "mad" time for both men's and women's NCAA teams. It's their last chance to get high scores to boost their RQS (for women: Regional Qualifying Score) or NQA (for men: National Qualifying Average)—an average used to determine who qualifies to Regionals and Nationals.
Right now, on the men's side, Stanford University is ranked #1 by a pretty comfortable margin (361.433 to #2 Oklahoma's 360.717). In women's NCAA, the University of Georgia is ranked first, with the University of Florida ranked right behind (197.305 to 197.090). (You can get all the NCAA rankings at Troester.com).
Both Georgia and Stanford were ranked first in a pre-season coaches poll, and have the advantage of competing at home at the NCAA Championships. Therefore, it's almost a no-brainer to consider each the favorite to win. But anything can happen in NCAA team finals, and even favorites can have a bad day in the gym. Georgia is competing without its star, Courtney Kupets, and the NCAA champion is determined by just that one team final competition, not a cumulative average of a successful season.
So, tell us, who do you think will win at NCAAs?
