Paul Hamm Withdraws from Nationals with a Broken Hand
Friday May 23, 2008
Reigning Olympic all-around champion Paul Hamm has been diagnosed with a broken bone in his right hand, suffered on parallel bars on the first day of competition at the 2008 US Nationals. Coach Miles Avery told the Associated Press that the injury is likely to take 4-6 weeks to heal, meaning Hamm may miss the Olympic Trials in June as well.
In that case, the US would have to accept a petition to select him to the team. As the country's leading all-arounder (and one of the best in the world), the US officials would be crazy not to let him on the team. The bigger issue is if he will be recovered in time to help the US team in Beijing and to compete for the all-around title.

Oh what a shame! Poor Paul. He was doing so well. Unless there is a complication, he will surely be on the Olympic team. But it must be so frustrating for him to miss all this training time. I wish him rapid healing!
