The Most Unlucky Gymnast

Friday June 13, 2008
As I'm sure you've noticed, today is Friday the 13th, considered by the superstitious to be a day of bad luck.

It got me thinking about how many gymnastics results are based on luck. There is tons of hard work that goes into the sport, but just a moment of bad luck can change everything.

The most unlucky gymnastics moment for me will always be Viktoria Karpenko's fall in the 2000 Olympic all-around competition. It had already been a mess of a competition because the vault height had been set wrong, and many will argue that Svetlana Khorkina was far more unlucky in that competition.

But Khorkina fell on moves that were difficult, while Karpenko simply tripped -- and ruined all chance for an all-around gold.

What do you think was the most unlucky gymnastics moment?

Viktoria Karpenko was so unlucky too because she was too hrut to compete at the 1996 Olympics. I also think Elena Produnova was very unlucky — she got 4th in a whole bunch of events at the 1999 worlds then got injured in 2000.

I think Dominique Dawes was very unlucky to fall in the all-around finals at the 1996 Olympics. She probably would have won if she hadn’t. She also fell at the 1993 and 1994 Worlds on vault

I totally agree about both Karpenko and Dawes. They both were very unlucky. I think Raducan was so unlucky too in the 2000 all-around. She just took cold pills!
