Shawn Johnson on Dancing with the Stars Semifinals
Monday May 11, 2009
Olympic beam champion Shawn Johnson danced her way to the second highest score during tonight's semifinals of Dancing with the Stars. Her first dance, the tango, scored a 30/30, and was praised highly by the judges. "Precision is your middle name, sister," said Carrie Ann Inaba, while Len Goodman extolled, "It was honestly, without a doubt, for me, your best performance."
Johnson's second dance, the jive, was not as well received by the judges, though. Goodman commented, "I would have liked to see a little bit more traditional jive throughout the performance and a little bit less slapstick." He gave her an 8, while Inaba and Bruno Tonioli each scored her at 9. Overall, Johnson's score kept her in second place to the pair of Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke, and with three of the four couples advancing to the finals, hopefully Johnson will be safe for another round.
One highlight of the show: a short segment about Johnson that featured her as a very young gymnast with coach Liang Chow, and also showed a brief interview with current elite stand-out Samantha Shapiro. I wasn't able to find video of that clip on YouTube, so please post a link if you see it.
