Make It or Break It: What Did You Think?

Now that I've watched Make It or Break It I don't know whether to laugh or cry. It's so ridiculously unrealistic, that I hope people don't think this is what gymnastics is really like. Starting a new gym the week before nationals, gymnasts without any muscle, the very low skill level of these supposed Olympic contenders? Yikes. I started to list out all the things that were off but the list got too long.

The silver lining: At least it's so over-the-top that it's sometimes funny. I liked the blackmail part at the end. Nice touch. I will be watching next week because I'm dying to know what was in the photo! (Too bad we'll probably never find out).

Good TV this is not, but it's given us all something to talk about before the actual gymnastics season picks up next month. What did you think of Make It or Break It?

Watch the episode here.

Haha I love your review! I agree, it is totally unrealistic which makes it funny. I loved watching Lauren’s “fall” on beam. And the blackmail scene! Oh and the stretches they do!

I agree that some of it was unrealistic, but that is also the case of other shows too depicting crime scene work, medical and more. My hope is that the show will be interesting enough to engage its viewers and draw them more into the sport as both participants and spectators. It’s nice to have a TV show out there with a gymnastics theme.

It is nice to show how the hard training and discipline that is required to succeed in gymnastics pays off, too bad this show is not going to give us that.Instead they are going to give us what most Gymnastics Teams’ families dread most- the drama loving and oxygen sucking gymnast and/or her crazy family(sometimes much worse than the good gymnast who is simply not ‘good enough’ for them.)who take the joy out of the the sport for the rest of us. Complete with all the bad behavior, and the beyond reasonable amount of tolerance for nonsense allowed by the coach. We all have at least one in the gym. Wait…if you have only one, perhaps you are lucky!

Thanks for including the link. I missed the original show. YIKES! It IS bad – but I watched it with my family (all gym enthusiasts) and we did laugh a lot! I wonder what folks who don’t realy know the sport thought of it.

I totally agree with everything. Don’t for get too the leos for a team usually match and are skin tight not the ilfitting one on these girls and even a low income family that is suppoes to be what emily is coming from can get a GK leo from good will they have lots of them for a buck – $10. Who would also uproot their whole family without a job waiting for them. so this supposed teen gymnast working at a pizza place is not supporting the family while practicing all day give me a break. and the puking in the bathroom PLEASE….not a gymnastic only thing. All teen girls from all walks of life have this issue hitting them why bring it in at all.

Its just a teen soap oprah and the sport could have been any competitive sport.

I hope the non gymnastic person doesn’t think this is how it really is in the gym.

(8) Lou says:

I thought one scene is the second episode was so bad, it almost seemed funny. The girls are putting gas in the car and get harassed by some tough guys. So two of the gymnasts start doing cartwheels toward them and they back away. What a stupid scene!

I compete for WOGA gymnastics. That is wear the past two olympians were produced and what goes on at my gym is nothing like what happens in this stupid show!!!! we never make our selves throw up!!!! thats just what stupid people think we do. And we all get along except for a few girls, but we are still nice to them! and we don’t compete at our own gym with only people from our gym. This is a very stupid show but I watch it just to see what crazy thing they say about gymnasts next!

(11) me says:

Oh god look at all the overly dramatic gymnasts throwing their 2 cents in. They didn’t make this show for you and you should be happy because this will get more people interested in real gymnastics if they enjoy it. Oh and to the last poster who thinks she’s cool because she trains at WOGA, please get yourself out of the gym and to English class ASAP. Gymnastics can only get you so far and you’re gonna need a little brains after you’re done with your very short gymnastics career. I can bet Carly and Nastia know proper word usage.

(12) Brittle says:

I was a competitive gymnast in the 80s (yikes) and was excited for a gymnastics show. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of gymnastics going on in this program. For some reason the springboard tampering really bothered me. Also the fact that they’re never sweating and their parents are always down on the gym floor is unrealistic. And I agree with the post about the eating disorders. It was a grossly overplayed stereotype in the 80s, and didn’t exist in my gym, either. However, we did have a “crying towel” that you had to shamefully sign if you got frustrated with a trick or couldn’t keep it together when the coaches were yelling at you. That’s the torture I remember.

(13) AG says:

I am sad to hear that “gymnasts” are talking down about a show on TV! I mean come on people! So what if it only has some reality to it. IT ISN’T A REALITY SHOW! Its about the drama involved. I am a Operating Room nurse and let me tell you Grey’s Anatomy is NOTHING like working in the OPERATING ROOM! The doctors don’t go in and sit with their patients or draw their blood or half the things they do on that show! I watch the show for entertainment purposes! Look at the show as entertainment value!

(14) Moey says:

I agree with AG. It’s entertainment people. You can’t expect them to have the actors doing gymnastics for the entire show or put a bunch of girlfriends together without any drama. I admit I was less than excited about it at first, especially with all the subpar skills they were doing but it grew on me!
