Shawn Johnson Torn ACL and Meniscus

By , About.com GuideFebruary 22, 2010

Follow me on:

Shawn Johnson2008 Olympian Shawn Johnson tore her ACL and meniscus last month during a ski trip to celebrate her 18th birthday. She talks about it in a blog entry posted yesterday on ShawnJohnson.net.

Johnson had surgery last week to repair the tear, and will be in a knee brace for six weeks. She says in the blog, "The one thing that scared me the most when this happened was that possibly I could not return to gymnastics even if I wanted to. Up until now, I've always had that option, so I've always been comfortable. The thought that option might be gone killed me!"

Luckily, the injury wasn't serious enough that gymnastics is out of the question for her, but Johnson hasn't announced a decision as to whether she will return to gymnastics competitively. She says in her blog entry, "I'm not committing to a comeback of any sort, but i have set up with [former coach Liang] Chow that gymnastics will definitely be a part of my recovery. It's a great way to get back in shape and to start figuring things out, along with rehabbing my knee."

Whoever said she’s retired, plz read her latest blog on her website. I don’t think she’s decided one way or the other. Let’s just wait and see. Also plz don’t under-estimate the determination and toughness of any elite athlete, esp. someone like SJ who is so exceptionally talented and strong both physically and mentally. I won’t be surprised if she comes back even better than ever and kicks butts again.

A fascinating discussion is worth comment. I do think that you should publish more on this subject matter, it may not be a taboo matter but typically people don’t discuss these issues. To the next! Kind regards!!

This design is incredible! You most certainly know how to keep a reader amused.
Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start my own blog (well, almost.
..HaHa!) Great job. I really enjoyed what you had to say,
and more than that, how you presented it.
Too cool!
