Nastia Liukin LineWarner Brothers Consumer Products announced today that it is partnering with 2008 Olympic all-around champion Nastia Liukin to create a Supergirl by Nastia clothing line. The clothes will be targeted to 8-12-year-old girls, and will be sold at JC Penney starting on July 20. Supergirl was also the sponsor of The Nastia Liukin Cup held earlier this month.

Some clothing from the line is pictured above, and a couple more photos can be seen on the press release.

The AP called this partnership a "breakthrough for for a world-class gymnast," and went on to say, "In the past, most gymnasts' long-term endorsement opportunities have been largely limited to gymnastics apparel and equipment."

I agree -- congrats to Liukin for making the leap to the mainstream market.

Bravo, Nastia!!

I am very proud to see Nastia working so diligently to set a profoundly positive example for young girls to follow!

Granted, this isn’t exactly like world peace, here. However, whenever I see something that promotes girl empowerment, and helps to build the self esteem and self-worth of girls in this age, when negativity and gossip-mongering rules the media, it is, indeed, a breath of fresh air!

I look forward to many more great and inspiring things to come from Nastia! :)

So is this the BIG ANNOUNCEMENT Nastia has been promoting on her twitter for so long?? An inexpensively priced kid clothing line sold at JCPenney??

If I remembered correctly, she already had a clothing line targeting teen girls in 2008 after Olympics. That line was cancelled quite soon due to poor sales. So this new line is actually her second clothing line, not as claimed by that AP article as “a breakthrough” or something. Anyhow, I hope this line will last longer than the last one.

Hi Amy, can you please also blog about Shawn Johnson’s big deals like “Got Milk?” ad. Campaign? Shawn is the first gymnast to be selected as a Got Milk Celerity, right? We’re having her posters at our school cafeteria right now. :)

I think it’s so cool that Nastia and Shawn are both popular still, 2 years after the olympics! Impressive that Nastia has enough star power to “go mainstream” to JC Penney. I do think it’s a breakthrough for a gymnast, especially one that isn’t quite as “Mary Lou Retton” bubbly! I hope it sells well!

Hi gymnastgirl,
Thanks for your comment. Yes, I will definitely blog about Shawn Johnson and any other gymnasts’ deals as well. That’s very cool that you have Shawn posters in your cafeteria! I think you might be right that she is the first gymnast to be on a Got Milk? ad, at least I can’t remember any others. The 2008 team has done a lot of interesting projects since the Olympics.

To mj,
You’re right, Nastia had a line with Vanilla Star jeans in 2008. We’ll see what happens — but this one seems to me like a bigger deal, and more of a breakthrough for a gymnast. I wish they all had their own clothing lines :-) . Thanks for your thoughts.

JCPenney’s headquarter is based in Plano, Texas, Nastia’s hometown.

So this is her Big Announcement, a kid clothing line at JCPenney?!?! To be honest, I was expecting something much bigger, after all the promoting she’s been doing on twitter extensively and mysteriously, for how long, months, years?? LOL.

A low-end kids line doesn’t seem like much of a “breakthrough”. As someone mentioned “Got Milk?” is a huge campaign. Carly has a music deal. The media’s just overhyping Nastia as usual.

I say good for her. I am impressed, and think it is big news, though I wish her big news was that she was coming back to gymnastics!

p.s. I don’t understand why people are upset or poo-pooing it because it’s a low-end line. Would you all rather a high end kids line? I think its great that people can afford to wear her clothes!
