By Amy Van Deusen, About.com

Definition: Compulsory competition is a type of gymnastics meet in which all athletes perform the same, prescribed routines. The skills are typically more simple than those performed in optional competition.

While this form of competition is no longer used in Olympic-level meets in artistic gymnastics, it is still used at the lower competitive levels of gymnastics and in trampoline.
Also Known As: Compulsories
Examples:
Dominique Moceanu performs the 1996 compulsory routine on beam
Shannon Miller does the 1992 compulsory routine on floor
