After retiring briefly and winning Dancing with the Stars, 2008 Olympian Shawn Johnson announced a comeback. In August 2011 she competed three events at US nationals, placing highest on beam (fourth). In October, she competed at the Pan Am Games and earned the bars silver. In June of 2012, however, Johnson announced her retirement from the sport, saying she had run out of time to make the 2012 Olympic team.
