Chellsie Memmel became a two-time world champion in 2003, at age 15. A freak foot injury kept her off the 2004 Olympic team, but a year later, Memmel won one of the most coveted medals in gymnastics: the world all-around title.

In 2006, she tore her shoulder competing at the World Championships, but came back to earn a berth on the 2008 Olympic team.

Grit and Determination:

Memmel has long been known for her competitive mettle. In 2003, she was the second alternate for the world team, but ended up competing when injury and illness took out three USA athletes. She was the rock of the team, competing all four events in finals and leading the squad to its first world team gold medal.

In 2006, Memmel injured her shoulder on bars during worlds but stayed in the competition. One rotation later she made a miraculous save on beam: one foot slipped on her front tuck (1:15 on video clip), but she somehow managed to avoid a fall.

At the 2008 Olympics, Memmel injured her foot in practice, but still competed on bars for the US team. Later, it was revealed that she had a fracture in her foot.

A Family Sport:

Chellsie Memmel, like US teammate Nastia Liukin, is coached by her father, Andy. Andy was a gymnast at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Memmel’s mom Jeanelle competed for Centenary College. The Memmels own M&M Gymnastics in New Berlin, WI, where Memmel trains.

Sisters Mara and Skyler both have done competitive gymnastics as well. Mara currently coaches at M&M Gymnastics, and Skyler is in the Junior Olympic program and hopes to become an elite.

Cool Skills:

Memmel has competed a jam to a double-front dismount on the uneven bars, an Arabian double pike on floor, and a barani (at :25) (front flip with a half twist) on the balance beam. She is well-known for performing difficult and original routines across all four events.

Personal Info:

Born June 23, 1988 in West Allis, Wisconsin, Memmel is the oldest of the three girls in her family. The Memmel family also has a dog named Tasha.

Memmel's favorite gymnastics event is bars. In her free time she likes to shop, hang out with friends, read, and go to movies.
