2009 American Cup:
Wiebers biggest competition to date was this years American Cup -- an international meet televised live in the USA. Wieber won the competition over American teammate Bridget Sloan, and many have called the event a coming out party for the young gymnast.Past winners of the meet have included Nastia Liukin, Shawn Johnson, and Carly Patterson, so Wiebers selection to compete at the event, show team coordinator Martha Karolyis high hopes for Wiebers future. Karolyi calls Wieber a new little star.
Still a Junior...for Awhile:
Despite Wiebers meet results, shes not eligible to compete in the senior division until 2011 due to the current age limits of the sport. Some competitions, such as the American Cup, will allow junior competitors, but Wieber will be ineligible for meets such as Worlds or the Olympics until 2011.An Impressive Resume at Nationals:
Wieber excelled at the 2008 Junior Nationals, winning the all-around, vault, and floor, and earning the silver on beam and bronze on bars. One year earlier she placed third in the all-around and on bars, and second on vault and beam.Cool Skills:
Wieber performs some very difficult gymnastics. She throws a double-twisting Yurchenko vault, a standing full (at 1:19) and a double pike dismount on beam, and a full-twisting double layout dismount on bars. Shes also attempted a double-twisting double layout dismount (called a Ray after American gymnast Elise Ray).Personal Info:
Jordyn Wieber was born on July 12, 1995 to David and Rita Wieber. She has three siblings -- Lindsay, Ryan, and Kyra -- and a dog named Lucy.Wieber began gymnastics in 1999, and her favorite events are beam and vault. She is coached by John and Kathryn Geddert at Twistars USA.
Outside of the gym, Wieber likes to sketch, read, and shop. Her favorite TV show is Greys Anatomy and movie is Little Miss Sunshine.
