Romanian gymnast Steliana Nistor took 4th all-around at the 2006 Worlds, then captured the silver behind American Shawn Johnson in 2007. At the 2008 Olympics, she placed fifth all-around, and has now retired from the sport.

Junior Standout:

Nistor dominated the competition as a junior athlete. She won the all-around and floor at the 2004 Junior Europeans, and took every event at the Romanian Junior Nationals that same year. Many speculated she would be the next superstar of Romanian gymnastics.

An Injury-Plagued Season:

In the beginning of 2005, Nistor was sidelined by both a back and knee injury. The injuries would keep her out of full training for nearly six months, and prevent her from competing for nearly a year.

The Comeback:

In 2006 Nistor finally returned to competition, with a silver in the all-around and gold on bars at Romanian Nationals, and an impressive fourth place finish in the all-around at Worlds. In 2007, she solidified her return with a silver in the all-around and on beam at Worlds.

Cool Skills:

Nistor competed a handspring to back full on balance beam, as well as a front flip to Arabesque. On bars, she performed a toe-on reverse hecht (called a Ray) to a Pak salto (:25).

Personal Info:

Nistor was born on September 15, 1989 to Dumitru and Steliana Nistor in Sibui, Romania. She has two brothers: Marian and Bogdan.

She began gymnastics in 1994, at the gymnastics club CSS Sibiu. She was on Romania's national team from 2002-2008.

Nistor has said that her favorite foreign gymnasts are Americans Nastia Liukin and Chellsie Memmel.
