Top American Olympic Gymnasts

By , About.com Guide

In 2004, the Americans captured both the men's all-around (Paul Hamm) and the women's (Carly Patterson). If it's possible, in 2008 the American squad could be even more successful. The US gymnasts have a depth and experience level that goes unmatched in the sport.

These are the American gymnasts that have the potential to bring home lots of medals in Beijing.

Shawn Johnson

The 2007 World-All-Around Champion, Johnson took elite gymnastics by storm last year by winning the Pan American Games, American Cup, US Nationals, and Worlds. At 4 ft. 8 she hardly looks threatening, but Johnson has world-class skills and the competitive toughness to match.

Many thought Liukin would have made the team in 2004 had she been old enough. Now she's four years better. A nine-time World Medalist, Liukin has one of the most difficult bar routines in the world and is known for her ballerina-like grace. With a family heritage of World and Olympic gold, Liukin has the genes – and the coaching skills of her father – to get her to the top.

Memmel won two World gold medals in 2003, but a foot injury kept her off the 2004 Olympic team. One year later she took home World all-around gold, but another injury -- this time to her shoulder -- has sidelined her for nearly two years. Now she's finally back and hoping for the Olympic experience she missed in Athens.

Sacramone has been a leader for the USA team for the past four years. As one of the few female gymnasts to ever balance NCAA and elite gymnastics, she has competitive experience most others can't match. In 2008, she's a gold medal hope on her two specialty events: vault and floor.

Samantha Peszek

Well-known for her vaulting and floor ability, Peszek is one of the essential lead-off gymnasts for the USA team in Beijing. She also does some of the coolest tricks in the book.

Bridget Sloan

The youngest member of team USA, Sloan was the alternate to the World team in 2007, but made the squad with clean performances and a never-give-up attitude.

Jonathan Horton

Horton was one of two men named to the Olympic team immediately after Trials. Now, with Paul Hamm out, he's the leader of the US men.

Most remember Hamm because of one competition: the controversial Olympic all-around in 2004. After a two-year break from the sport, Hamm came back to prove that the 2004 gold was no fluke. A broken bone suffered at this year's Nationals has ended his Beijing dreams.
